A view of the forest through the misty fog. . . swirling colors of a bustling street market. . . the winds wafting over the countryside. . . surroundings to be interpreted through the experiences of the day. Surroundings, an exhibition by artists Amy Fuller and Nicolas Roche brings paintings and mixed media pieces to Gallery C for you to experience, interpret, ponder and enjoy.
Guest artist Gary Carstens will join Fuller and Roche for this unique and moving exhibit. Gary Carstens is a studio potter and owner of Mississippi Mud Studios in Dubuque since 1997.Landscapes have become the subject matter for most all of his sculptural and functional items. Lately, Carstens have been using the disc as a frame, much like the camera lens. He finds these stoneware and porcelain canvases to be very responsive to subtle alterations of shape and texture.
Studio Works artist Amy Fuller graduated from St. Olaf College in 2008 with a distinction in studio art. She loves traveling internationally, and derives much of the subject matter for her paintings from photos she has taken abroad. The series of oil paintings presented in Surroundings was inspired by trips to India and Spain.
Nicolas Roche is a graduate of Loras College where he studied both creative writing and studio art with an emphasis in painting and drawing. Roche’s abstract works, often inspired by landscapes, are comprised of several layers of paint. His incessant reworking, detailing and course corrections toughen the skin of his canvases leaving behind a textured ground where the images develop.
