Not all stories are told only in words, they can be communicated through visions, memories, and glimpses from the past. Visual Stories: Surface & Play combines the nostalgic mix-‐media, photographic sculptures of artist Jeffrey Bruce, set alongside the expressive, colorful and textural encaustic paintings of Joe Conover. Together these works create a playful & intriguing environment be interpreted through your own experiences, memories and influences. Join us and meet the artists from another Mississippi river town with a rich history: Quincy, IL.
Jeffrey Bruce is a visual artist living and working in Quincy, Illinois. He utilizes sculpture, photography, painting, found objects, and the written word in his mixed media art. He earned a BFA in Photography from the Kansas City Art Institute and has explored diverse training in skills ranging from traditional blacksmithing to creative writing.
Joe Conover creates paintings with encaustic wax because it is an excellent medium for putting colors, shapes and textures together, abstractly, to evoke a thought or idea. Joe states: “I’m somewhat process-‐oriented. The gratifying experience is combining sight, or color, and feel, or texture. I enjoy the unintended consequences of trying to combine certain traditional techniques, such as watercolor on paper, dipped in wax, or using oil pastels on wax and fusing. In wax, the result is often unexpected.”
Gallery C is pleased to have the artists present for the Opening Reception on Friday, April 4, 5:30 -‐ 8:30pm. All are invited and welcome to attend this exhibition, and to participate in the expanding art scene in the Millwork District. There is no charge and refreshments will be served.
