Opening Reception: Friday, September 16, 2016, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Gallery C is proud to announce an exhibition featuring the work of Madison artist Holly Meyers and Dubuque artist Paula Hopkins entitled “Stories Told and Untold: Works by Holly Meyers & Paula Hopkins.”
Holly Meyers is Madison, Wisconsin artist who explores storytelling through painting and drawing.
Meyer’s unique approach to capturing images and portraits makes connections between the human form and nature. By employing watercolor, India ink, gold leaf, acrylic, and varying blotting techniques, Meyers achieves an ethereal and haunting expression that captures a sense of place that tethers a moment to the earth, yet, invites the viewer to create their own story. A self-taught artist, Meyers has emerged in the region as working artist whose daily life is a creative one. “Stories connect others to me and me with others,” Meyers says of her work, “It didn’t start that way but has led to a wonderful surprise.”
Paula Hopkins lives, works, and creates in Dubuque, Iowa. She studied ceramics and art at Clarke University and found her true expressive state through assemblage. Her signature art form is the shadow box, infused with a dream-like aura, the boxes invite the viewer into her own private magical world. These poetic boxes tell stories both imagined and grounded in a sense of place. Employing found object pieces and treasures from antique stores, thrift shops, and Grandma’s attic, Hopkins’ work uses a surrealist technique of unexpected juxtaposition that explores childhood, history, space, birds, and trinkets that reveal story after story.
Gallery C is pleased to host the artists at an Opening Reception on Friday, September 16 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The public is invited and encouraged to attend and to participate in the Historic Millwork District’s innovative art scene.
